Slice-of-Life essays celebrate life’s ordinary moments! This assignment sheet guides your students through writing sweet Slice-of-Life narrative essays. These short (250-500) narrative non-fiction pieces reveal the beauty of our seemingly mundane daily rituals that, taken together, are the stuff of life. The sheet keeps it simple with brief guidelines and suggestions to assure student success with this low-stakes writing activity. The slice-of-life essay is one of my favorite narrative assignments. Read my blog post, “Slice-of-Life Writing: The Anti-Instagram Narrative” for how we approach these in my high school classes, but know that I have had great success with this assignment with middle schoolers (6-8) as well.
Also… I’ve added two student-written slices as examples for students. Read my blog post for more.
