If you need a way to bring Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus into the 21st century, look no further!

In my British Literature class, I’ve been working to incorporate contemporary films into my units in order to demonstrate the ongoing and timeless relevance of our texts. For Doctor Faustus, I have chosen Limitless, the 2011 action-thriller film (rated PG; 1:45 long) starring Bradley Cooper. Basically a Faustian bargain for the 21st century, here’s a brief summary of the film from IMDb: “With the help of a mysterious pill that enables the user to access 100% of his brain’s abilities, a struggling writer (played by Cooper) becomes a financial wizard, but it also puts him in a new world with many dangers.”

This two-page movie guide with key includes twelve questions about the movie and how it connects to Doctor Faustus. The first page includes eight objective questions where students answer a variety of FITB, true/false, or short response questions. The second page includes four critical thinking questions for students to either answer on paper or in a class discussion.

I think you’ll find that this guide allows your students to watch the movie without becoming too distracted with answering the questions. In fact, I have added the words “Ideas” on many of the blanks to encourage students to jot down their ideas while watching the movie, so they can then later return to those answers to clarify and/or confirm.
